FAQ
Starting batteries
1. I’ve charged the starting battery, but two cells have lower density than the others and voltage less than 12 volts, what does this mean?
It might be that the battery has two short-circuited cells or two broken cells.
2. During the regular use of the battery, the electrolyte level has dropped, what should I add?
The only thing that you must add is distilled water.
3. I checked the battery and I noticed a dark (almost black) acid color in all the cells, moreover the density isn’t homogeneous and the voltage level is abnormal: what is the problem?
It’s very likely that the battery has been overcharged or exhausted.
4. I charged a battery and then I carried out a high current discharge test using my tools to check whether it was defective or not. I noticed that the voltage quickly drops below 10 volts and there is a noticeable boil in a cell, what does that mean?
The element is short-circuited.
5. I have charged a battery, then I carry out a high current discharge test using tools to check whether it is defective or not. I noticed that the voltage drops and it seems to boil uniformly, what does this mean?
The battery isn’t faulty, but it’s sulphated.
Stationary Batteries
1. When should I top up the battery?
The battery is topped up solely and exclusively when the last charge has ended. It’s advisable to restore the level up to the maximum in order to decrease the frequency of topping up. It’s advisable to periodically check the level of it, as well, to prevent the electrolyte concentration from reaching high values.
Traction Batteries
1. When should I top up the battery?
The battery is topped up solely and exclusively when the last charge has ended.
2. Can the battery be left unused for a long time?
Yes, however you ought to check the state of charge periodically (about once a month) and, if necessary, carry out a charging cycle. It’s recommended never to leave the battery completely discharged, because charging difficulties may occur, like sulphation on the plates.
3. I often charge the battery for an hour during lunch break, but I don’t know if I don’t damage the battery that way?
This way of charging (“bottle charging”) could shorten the battery’s lifespan. It’s recommended to get a second battery to exchange.
4. How long does it take to recharge a battery?
The duration of the recharge varies and depends on the following main factors:
– residual charge level
– charging method (charging curve current)
– temperature
